Legitimately, what were they thinking? The fact that this didn't cause an uproar is just a testament to how disinterested everyone was in this film. Zero cultural impact.

Matt Reeves couldn't help himself, huh? The movie, which was already too long, didn't need this scene whatsoever. People need a break from the Joker, and instead, he gave us arguably the worst version so far.

Trying to make grimdark Batman after Nolan just did an iconic version of that exact thing was a fool's errand. Because in order to not just be a retread to have to be even more tryhard and edgier, to the point where it becomes almost unintentional parody. Hence, this Joker.

He can't not be scarred because if he's not all scarred up he's not edgy, but Ledger's joker was scarred so he has to be REALLY scarred so you know this is even edgier and more extreme to the max bro. It's a race to the bottom. Should have just put the Joker on Ice for a while and avoided this whole conundrum

Keoghan is a great actor but this role is profoundly miscast and/or doesn't mesh well with other directorial choices. Keoghan is great at unsettling the audience subtly in e.g. The Killing of a Sacred Deer where he is genuinely a creepy and threatening presence. But the Joker is anything but subtle and requires more expressionistic acting and as a result Keoghan produces a cringeworthy performance.
Ledger-Joker was strangely charismatic, even campy and over-the-top, but it came off genuinely unsettling without trying to be. Meanwhile it feels here Keoghan is constantly trying to be threatening and creepy in a way that completely undercuts any actual tension.

>The premise of he scene and writing is pretty good.

It truly is a kino premise. Batman and Joker having a Clarice and Hannibal Lecter type of cooperating relationship. It truly is a kino premise. But the clearly got over their skis trying to be le' edgy in the implemention. The bogged out slobbering deformity thing with the Joker is a HARD miss. They should keep the basic premise but completely redesign their joker not to be a disgusting abomination and instead have him be...you know...the joker, and they would have something to write about that could be kino AF.

The hero and the villain cooperating is one of my favorite tropes. It's right up there with the showing a villain way back in the days when he was a good guy before he turned evil.

Those types of stories are always kino if they don't get screwed up in the execution.

Superman kind of sucked but Gunn has gone on record recently saying a DCU Batman movie should be more grimdark and not campy like Adam West. I will personally go on the record as saying Batfleck was best on screen Batman we've had though.
