It takes more than just saying you accept Christ for that to work, you have to actually believe it and mean it. Someone whose literally waiting till right before they die to try and repent clearly doesn't believe and won't be able to force themselves to at the last minute regardless of what they say.

Neither the show writers nor you know anything about biblical Christianity or the salvation which is in Christ Jesus. Salvation is not a magical incantation that you say, it is an earnest confession of the heart after realizing that you are lost and need of Jesus Christ to be your savior.
There are people on their deathbeds today who have denied the Lord for so long that they are no longer able to understand their need for salvation, they may cry out to God but their hearts are hardened from their life of rejecting the Lord, there is no genuineness anymore and they lack the ability to understand their need for salvation.
