this is in the Forgotten Realms which was INTENTIONALLY pretty barebones: just a few paragraphs describing a city or faction. everyone complains about Dragonlance because it was novels first, D&D setting second (the events of the novel are "canon").
then Forgotten Realms did the exact some thing with some shitty books, and now it's a clusterfuck of characters and events. even does the comic book gimmick of "resetting" every time they want to simplify it.
