at the end, did the coast guard boat just turn around? did they not investigate the island mysteriously exploding right in front of them? were the detectives crazy rants ever confirmed? did they go back to try to find Gi-Hun? the ending left so much unexplained

The first two episodes went legitimately viral. That stopped as soon as people got to the next few episodes and were embarrassed they talked it up.

probably because the first season only had mass appeal due to it being babby's first death game. it was different and new to a lot of netflix's core viewership, but that audience didn't ask for more and the creator didn't plan for more. it was just suits doing what they do. anyway, the show was always dogshit. nobody can do it like kaiji.
