I really liked The Real Adventures Jonny Quest, especially the whole Questworld VR thing they had.

It was run as a "mainstream" entertainment just like the Flintstones.
It used a lot of dark backgrounds as well as detailed ones and the inventions were usually cutting edge Popular Mechanics designs.
It was careful in the use of shadows, both those of the characters as well as the settings.

I've been revisiting a lot of Hanna Barbera shows on DVD lately. Jonny Quest, The Flintstones, Josie and the Pussycats, Top Cat, The Hillbilly Bears, The Herculoids. I miss the old Cartoon Network and Boomerang.
