It's implied that they're a high level (lvl 80+ or something) after the original story. That's why without materia Tifa can take on the dude in the church as such high speed and strength, Cloud can jump so high, everyone can fall great heights, people can deflect bullets, take shots to the face. Even if it's a movie it still follows some of the rules of the game where a high level means high HP and stats. It's stupid I know, but that's Anime in many cases, suspension of disbelief and even a weird explaination is one.

Advent Children was cool as fuck and I'll die on that hill. The combat in the games should feel like the party coordinating together to attack monsters like in the Bahamut scene.

this is the part I disagree with.
I think it is a reflection of Sephiroth's character more than anything else. It's not meant to be taken literally. How else could he destroy the planets again when he casts it a second time?
