Why is space opera always so far in the future?

To make it as removed from modern day politics as possible? Otherwise you'd have to feature China vs America or some bullshit like that.

Dune's particular setting is also like a neo-feudalism with no artificial intelligence or robots so they need to explain how that came about, so they do this setting it far off into the future after the Butlerian Jihad and a period of long tech stagnation.

It was the right choice. Alien with its casette futurism and clunky huge computers aged like milk whereas Dune aged like fine wine.

Allows you to easily set up cultures and history that influences how those cultures approach the universe. Look at our own cultures now. We're only truly influenced by the last few thousand years. So you fling humanity multiple times that into the future and you can have them act however you want by developing them however you like. Humanity itself becomes alien, and more interesting

Ironic given that both Dune and Foundation are modern politics but with spaceships + space blasters.

Usually sci-fi is set like 20 years from now, and starts looking stupid in retrospect when you get to that time and the world is basically unchanged.

By setting it 10,000 years in the future you're essentially establishing that you're in a different epoch altogether, ALL of the old social and cultural and religious institutions are truly archaic, to the point that nobody except really hardcore historians would even remember the 20th century.
