How do you guys enjoy movies? Like, what's fun about them? Do you get super high/take acid? I dunno, it's just so fucking boring for me to sit and watch a movie unless I'm loaded up on something. Where is the fun here? Is watching a movie supposed to be a good time? I don't have fun watching them.
Learn how to appreciate and enjoy things for what they are without deconstructing them.
Just as a chef can enjoy a michelin star meal as well as some McDonald's fries, so too should you make sure you can enjoy all different sorts of movies.
Most importantly though, you need to remember how to enjoy film *as film* again.
If you've not been careful you're now the guy who deconstructs the shit out of everything almost involuntarily and the issue with that is that most films aren't exactly fun once stripped down to their constituent parts.
Booze and drugs can help short term, because they slow the brain and interrupt that buzzkill process, but they're ineffective in the long term. Especially booze. Before long you're drinking so much to enjoy the movie you either nod off or can't remember it.
The better approach is to start actively practice not watching films as a critic. Literally tell yourself to just sit down and enjoy the fucking thing. Treat it like you'd treat quitting smoking, hard work over time.
After some consistent effort you'll start loosening up enough to actually appreciate the things you stopped appreciating and you'll start having fun again.
Once you're able to enjoy shit again, make sure to keep being a joyless deconstructionist from being too much of what you do in the future. We all love critiquing and thinking about the medium, but if you go down the rabbit hole after a while it becomes all grinding and no sausage.
Good luck, anon. It can get better.
