Only the first book is good. Frankly, the author dropped the ball in book 2 and after. Book one was so good. Then it got weird, not in a good way, with virtual reality and shit.
A psychic killer virus was a great idea. Whatever book 2 and the others were about was just dumb.

Book 2 is the best IMO. It turns every loose plot thread from the first one (the overwritten tape warning, the smallpox, the hermaphrodite thing, Asakawa being a journalist, Takayama being a creep) upside down and the apocalyptic ending is awesome. The movie is cool too.
Book 3 tries to do the same but it falls flat on its face with the Matrix stuff.
Book 4 and beyond are a return to form. But Book 1 and 2 remain the GOAT.

It was never a "psychic killer" virus. It was always a visually-transmitted virus that caused heart attacks, that's the big reveal of the first book. The psychic stuff is incidental to its creation but not its fatality. Maybe you watched the movie first and it made you expect something else, but the science angle of the sequels was the same as the first book's.
