At one point he was shooting up in his bathroom at home. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or is that too vague?

Nah, the film streamlined the jumbled mess that is Trainspotting and made a coherent and compelling movie about a bunch of addicts.
The book reads like a bunch of short stories from an inexperienced author who hasn't mastered his craft yet.
