Rewatched a bunch of 90s stuff recently.
That's one of the standouts.
People will say akira and GITS but i think those have absolutely shit scripts (carried by good music and art).
Wheras ninja scroll manages to stay perfectly coherent from beginning to end - it even managed to handle the romance well, which is something most anime is absolutely terrible at.

Check out other stuff by the director, it's all pretty solid but i think Ninja Scroll is his best. He did stuff like Cyber City and Wicked City.

Ninja Scroll was good, great art but ultimately a nothing burger. Same with a lot of those other more famous movies/OVAs in a similar vein like Wicked City and Oedo.

I can never get behind these threads because even old anime is pure kitsch aesthetics wise, and the writing is terrible and unsubtle. It's made by and for autistic people, that's why every show and film has no complexity and tells you exactly how to feel, why everything needs to be explained, every internal monologue, villain's reasoning, flashback flashback flashback, etc. All of the old ones I've tried out that I see get recommended here often and are held in high regard were complete trash which is odd because I assumed the taste was better here than /a/ because some people here are adults and watch classic cinema but alas.
