At the end of the day all this means is it's 3-5 clicks instead of 1 but yeah, you should really considering pirating more of the content you watch at this point since all content providers, be it film, tv, music, gaming or porn, seem determined to let their customers know they absolutely hate them.

Streaming services will make sure to turn it into a maze where you have to call in and verify your identity with ID and an electricity bill, and it will all be automated by AI that will reject your request to cancel.

Everything to keep you on their subscriptions.

What they'll end up doing is make something like 10 screens/popups trying to convince you to stay subscribed offering promos and whatnot. They'll change the procedure on cancelation every few weeks so if you look up a guide on "how to cancel" it'll be outdated quickly so you're stuck fiddling with finding the cancel button yourself.
Amazon already does this with canceling prime subscriptions.

if I was designing a system to be intentionally annoying, I wouldn’t allow a user to change a credit card unless they added a new, valid credit card

bonus points if you force the user o “confirm” the new payment method by drawing a couple of cents and then asking how much you charged

I once used some streaming service which offered some free time and of course I wanted to cancel before it started billing me. You had to call them and it took like 20 minutes in total of waiting and canceling. I don't use any subscription service anymore except maybe the netflix my dad has with 2 screens. Making it harder just makes sure you won't subscribe ever again, very retarded move by the streaming services.

I only use ESPN and Spotify. Stopped streaming TV/Film a year ago now. Just started collecting physical media again. Not even to have a collection, it's just psychologically more beneficial. You have to commit to buying one (1) thing and it makea you want to watch and engage with it, versus "Netflix and chill (on your phone)".
Streaming random sports games fills the gap while I wait for my moobies to arrive at my door.

No wtf? You're not in a contract and you don't have a loan so it won't do anything for your credit. It's the same thing as your card getting declined. These services don't ask for payment after the services were rendered but before, meaning you won't have a situation where you got a month of service and decided to not pay so they report it to the credit agencies as debt.

I do the same thing as >>212737385
, if I have to spend more than 2 brain cells to cancel service, I just block the payment through the card, fuck them.

I use Privacy for online stuff though, lets me create a separate virtual credit card for every site and I can set it to "one time use" or just set a max monthly allowance so even if their shitty website gets hacked and they get all the cc info my money is safe.

Just the other day I wanted to cancel a gym subscription but I had my membership through this work program thing and that website was so ass I could not find the fucking cancel button so I just deleted the privacy card I had for that website and voila, cancellation complete.

The gold standard of making cancellation a chore is to require a phone call to some call center in india where you spend 45min on hold and then get cross examined about why you are cancelling along with offers for other services. The whole experience will turn you into a pirate.

Probably don't allow you to outright delete your credit card info. Probably only allow you to change to a valid alternate credit card.
At least that's how a lot of subscription based platforms do it. Force you to jump through the hoops to cancel your subscription.

I work for a company that isn't a streaming service but has a similar monthly subscription that was supposed to be hit by the same FTC shit.
I signed up for one month to save some money and see what exactly I'm charging people for, and canceling fucking sucked. No way to do it online, had to call the customer service number then menu dive and wait on hold for half an hour before getting an Indian woman on the phone who spent 15 solid minutes trying to convince me to not cancel and refusing to take 'no' for an answer.
They absolutely can and will make it fucking suck to cancel.

I've heard about cancelling stuff like gym memberships being harder over there, but I'm having a hard time imagining how they go about it. Is it like you have to call at specific hours to cancel or something? Or that when you subscribe you have to maintain membership for at least a full year? Or have some documents on you?

Over here it's never taken more than a minute to cancel anything.

phone service providers do that in over here in France too, but it's become so well known that a lot of people just do that cancel maneuver every year to get a better price. My brother's gf got us a family plan with unlimited GBs for 5 eu a piece doing that.

Usually things like having to call the customer support number during business hours or, in some really shitty cases, requiring a physical form to be filled out and either mailed in or even handed off in-person at a very specific location. Planet Fitness is notorious for doing the latter, where even though they're a national chain, the only way you can cancel is to fill out the cancelation form and submit it in-person at the gym where you originally signed up.
