In essence it's actually a medieval legal drama by way of rashomon that's steeped in feudalism and the politics of France at the period.
Without spoiling:
>Two up and coming squires (Driver and Damon) become friends over the course of their careers>One is uneducated and a social retard (Damon) but a competent fighter while the other (Driver) is an all-rounder who learned math and latin in the seminary and has a good political instinct>Predictably, Driver starts having a lot of success since he's useful to their lord (Affleck) and doubly so because he's actually fun to have around while Damon resorts more and more to military service to advance because he's inept at anything else>The friendship grows strained as their careers develop and they compete for station and success>Driver ends up fucking Damon's wife>Damon loses his shit and appeals to Affleck, who rules in favor of Driver because Driver is useful and not a sperg>Damon goes over their head to Paris and appeals to the King, who by a fluke actually takes the case and ultimately rules that it will be settled by combatThis is the basic plot, but the neat part is that it explores the events from both men and the wife's perspectives Rashomon style. It's all pretty compelling to watch.
>Wary of Affleck / DamonPart of why I like Affleck in this is he's a smaller role. He mostly is there to dunk on Damon which alone is a good reason to watch the film.
