Why did Gunn feel the need to change Jor and Lara from being concerned parents who send their only son away to build a better legacy than that of Krypton to world conquering warlords? Why did he make Jor-El into Zod?

I know Snyder laid it on too thick with the savior stuff but this feels like too hard of a change. Donner and Brando's take is still best.

There was an abandoned story arc in Smallville where it was revealed through cave drawings (don't ask) that Jor El sent Kal El to Earth to conquer it, not protect it.

It gave a ton of weight to Lex and why he felt the need to turn on Clark. He wanted to save humanity. In the end, I think they dumbed it down to Clark lied to Lex about being an alien and that's what tore them apart.

I think the idea with Superman is that his earth parents are the ones that instilled in him a sense of doing the right thing. The quintessential American childhood where the salt of the earth people can confidently tell you right from wrong, and how to be proud of who you are and what you’re protecting.
