Rian was given a layup with Luke's X-wing being submerged underwater to have a scene of him raising it in the second movie, but literally thought that Luke had no ability to do anything about it because it was under water. One of the main factors in why the sequels, TLJ especially, failed is because there's not much there that appeals to kids. Say what you will about Lucas, but he knew how to choose awesome designs for ships, aliens and minor characters that kids would remember and want toys of, something the sequels lack; like 1/4 of the nu aliens okay but for the most part they look like potato monsters. Lucas also knew how to get good fight choreographers; the sequels' fight scenes have become infamous for how lame they are with the only fight with any energy to it, TLJ's throne room, being hilariously inept and full of mistakes.

I think kids liked TFA enough, but TLJ killed any momentum that had since most of it is people bitching at each other or pointlessly antagonizing the audience, TROS tried desperately but impotently to win the audience back to no avail, though I think kids enjoyed TROS more since at least it moves fast and actually has stuff happening in it.
