Seems like he's out of ideas and grasping at classic horror IP to save him, but it could be kino. I'm always willing to give werewolf movies a shot, but the one with Benicio Del Toro sucked, and the most recent one that flopped I didn't bother with. Nosferatu wasn't great, though I didn't take issue with the script primarily as much as I did the visual and aesthetic direction, even if the former wasn't remarkable. It was clear Eggers had lofty designs on romantic and morbid from the get go and wanted to blend them together in a poetic sense touching on death and fate, but the end result seemed to have oddly defanged the horror. I had some reservations going in because I fundamentally feel that the Nosferatu tale as a whole is inferior to what directly inspired it in Dracula overall, which was the apotheosis of folklore and fear incarnate. The sum of all superstitions wrapped in the horseshoe of the Carpathian mountains as said in the book.
Biggest issues:
>Castle sequence, despite having the great intro in the wooded glade with the spectral carriage, is raced through by eggers at a breakneck pace, culminating in the almost comical shot of Hoult's character plummeting into the river. There's no time to build up Orlok, and the immediacy of his ghoulish demeanour reduces him into a beast-like presence.
>General twilight and blue-tinged tone prevalent throughout with an almost disney-like fairy tale approach to the visual storytelling as grand wide panning shots of the city and Orlok's approaching plague ship loom near the city
>Ridiculous fit by the spazlord Depp just looked amateurish
>The film went out of its way to build Orlok up prior to his initial encounter with Hoult in the ritual scene with the realtor, like it was introducing a big Marvel villain, which was again emphasised in the decrepit manor shot as Orlok stood menacingly
>Dafoe was playing a lesser version Van Helsing with the theatricality and gravitas as if he desperately wanted to actually be playing Van Helsing, who is a far more involved character
It was so lame and oddly grandiose
Eggers has always been pretty overrated I felt but I gave him a pass because his films were at least distinct, but Nosferatu was a huge waste of time

Both Nosferatu and The Northman were underwhelming when compared to his first two entries. They weren't bad per se, but "not bad" isn't something Eggers should be able to get away with.
