Its a very expensive called bluff when WB threatened this series to scare daniel radcliffe, emma watson and rupert grint into signing a contract for a harry potter and the cursed child adaptation (that required them to apologise to rowling). Their 11th hour gambit to get these guys to sign was to threaten a new tv series that would effectively outpace the films in runtime and diminish the trios stranglehold on the zeitgeist image of harry potter. They announced the series to news outlets in order to really scare them into signing

The trio didnt bite, so now warner is saddled with this embarrassment for at least the pilot episode, and possibly a whole season. Unless its a gigantic hit, in which case they will seriously attempt to override the films and their popularity from the zeitgeist

they are very short books that fit very nicely into a full length movie
