Could've also used a lens and sunlight to "project" a sketch of a skull from an angle, and then traced it. Lenses had been around for a few hundred years by that point.
"camera obscura" "projection" with a pinhole had been widely experimented with for over a thousand years by that point. Davinci had also designed a projection system using lenses 60 years prior.
