Also there's English pride, expectations, and pressure coming from all directions. He didn't want anyone to know he's a failure. I don't think I'd kill myself for losing an important job but it sure as fuck feels like the whole world is falling apart. I was in a similar situation before (obviously not legal issues) when I got fired from a very prestigious job. I didn't interact with anyone for 2 months. I was so ashamed.

There’s a scene in one of the middle seasons where Peggy is moping about her lack of love life successful. She tells Don “I see the attention these pretty girls get, it’s so easy for them.” Don replies “do you even really want that?”

It’s devastating to Peggy because what she really wanted was for Don to say “oh you’re just as pretty as those girls” but he doesn’t: He confirms her physical status as lower tier, which eventually helps her in her career, but is brutal to hear in the moment.
