This movie feels like a pretentious theatre kids attempt at making a deep movie. So many references to mythology art and paintings but with zero purpose behind it. It’s like a puddle pretending it’s an ocean.

I couldn't even finish the Northman, and Nosferatu. In fact, I turned Nosferatu off about half way and watched Copolla's Dracula instead.

I still think an Eggers Moby Dick movie could be cool.

why is it that this specific movie attracts this type of critique again and again and again? I'm trying to figure out why it makes people mad specifically for this reason that it's not "deep enough"
It's assumes something about the movie when you do that. It's a superficial critique based solely on the fact that its a black and white movie in a non-standard aspect ratio, that's why, right? It's black and white so it has to be pretentious.

It's such a straight forward movie, sure it lacks any real plot but the actual movie itself is very accessible because its fun, because its immersive and an actual experience as opposed to being the thing you want it to be (a pretentious movie where nothing happens)

I'm so confused by people that hate on this movie for this reason when its so easy to sit down and enjoy it. "NOOOO IT MADE A REFERENCE TO MYTHOLOGY, THAT MEANS I CANT ENJOY IT BECAUSE ITS TRYING TO BE SOMETHING ITS NOT!!! ITS PRETENTIOUS AND ITS FAILING BECAUSE ITS NOT DEEP"

The movie was good and original in it's own way

It reached to the surface of the madness that is inside all of us

Many things even the crazyness of the movie feels related to a previous life or the current life that we are living the director done a good job with the tools and actors that he had been giving

Fell asleep during this one

It’s not some great masterpiece but I really enjoyed watching it. Dafoe did a great job goading and fucking with Pattinson, but there were still some funny scenes with levity like when they got drunk dancing, and when Pattinson gets Dafoe back by saying he doesn’t like his lobster.

Its just a fun watch
