It's because Zim is a proper villain protagonist. He's not a bad guy who learns to be a good guy, or a bad guy who is too comically inept, he's a proper bad guy who just gets caught up in the bleak absurdity of the world owing to his constant fuck-ups. It's a very proper dark humor show that there really is no equivalent.

It was extremely creative and managed to do a good job of translating the horror genre into something that kids could consume safely, so much so that parents probably didn't even notice how dark it actually was.

It's likely why it left such an impression on the millennials who were exposed to it. The subjects and topics it touches on are the types of things kids are fascinated with during their teenage years (death, good vs evil, etc), and it wrapped it all up into a cute little cartoon with memorable characters.

Still holds up. Such a better show compared to what else was on then (ChalkZone and Odd Parents sucked ass) The Animation was good for it's time. I always appreciated the parity of the lead characters: sometimes Dib wins, sometimes Zim does. Both are equally clueless. Le quirky random humor did get overused but not any worse than most Adult Swim shows of the same time. Could do without the Gaz episodes.

One thing that's really cool about Fantasy / Sci Fi fiction is that they are always unique to the perspective of their time. 1950s sci fi is filled with hope and optimism about a multi-planetary future, yet they failed to predict the computer or internet into their imaginations of tomorrow. Fantasy stories from the 1940s are masculine and brutal and exotic, yet grounded in ancient history (Conan).

Invader Zim is special because it so perfectly captures the early 2000s feeling. It shares so many vibes with X-Files, The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex and Lain while being completely silly and over the top. Gross bums, black trench coats, derelict and crumbling urban areas, UFO crazies, conspiracy theorists, shadowy government organizations and the growing goth craze. It's both a time capsule to 2001 as well as a strange prediction of the quirky, pop culture consuming gluttonous future humanity was heading into and now exists within.
