Harry Potter was and still is a money making juggernaut. But unfortunately the books and movies ended so it’s not making as much money as it once was. So they tried making a prequel film series but that ended up being total shit and was cancelled. They tried making a sequel play but that got terrible reviews and any adaptations of it were canned. Since they’re having bad luck with prequels and sequels they decided to just remake the movies and hope it makes money.

It helped the story. HP tends to meander way too much without moving the story an inch before the last few chapters. There are some misses (skipping the Marauders backstory is probably the worst offender), but overall, it's better that way.

The movies left an absolutely immense amount of plot out from the books. A TV series could rectify that. To be honest, if someone has only watched the movies and has never read the books, I don’t see how the story would make any sense to them at all given how much plot and context was removed.
