I think it just kinda evolved with the times into podcasts and shit where you don't really have to come up with real material to perform in front of a live audience.

Patrice O'Neal wasn't around anymore to verbally abuse up and coming standups to either filter them out of the business or toughen them up to be genuinely funny. Without Patrices around you end up with Hannah Gadsby, Iliza Shleshinger, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, and so on. Everyone is just allowed to run completely wild and be unfunny.

I live in a fairly big city with a lot of entertainment shit, so our local standup scene is pretty dolid, and its big enough most touring comics will come through.

social media and constant scrutiny turned them bitter and overly defensive. Stand up bits that are unfinished or lack polish are not meant to be seen by millions. besides podcasts (before they hit it big and go corpo) are a better medium for comedians anyway. I'd rather watch early mssp episodes than any special on whatever streaming service comes out.

The funny comedians have been dead for years and now it's a Joe Rogan circle jerk and shit spin offs. I miss when Mitzi Shore ran the comedy club and was brutal to up and coming comedians. Covid was the first sign that comedy was on the down and out. Then became the cancel culture that further cemented that notion which make comedian "afraid" to make jokes about specific groups.

We started learning how seriously they take themselves and started hearing their every thought, because they ramble for hours at a time, once or twice a week on hundreds of different podcasts they all share and go on. We learned how neurotic they can be, too. Before they were just funny guys who told jokes. I liked Bill Burr a lot more when he was just a guy who made me laugh and I didn't know his whole life story.
