I’m Italian American and from Staten Island - when I started my first real job I heard endless jokes about it. Seemed harmless but at the end of the year we did a secret Santa - the person who got me gave me a bunch of stereotypical items related to Italian culture. It had everyone laughing, including myself in the moment, but after taking a day or two to think of it I realized, wow these guys aren’t ever going to take me seriously. I moved on from that job shortly after and at the next place when the jokes inevitably came up I didn’t entertain them.
