Donnie saved the world by bringing back an artifact from a parallel universe (the jet engine} and killing himself with it to stop the creation of a divergent world that'll end the main timeline. He had to kill the rabbit guy so that his ghost could go back in time and guide him through the journey.
It's a story of self-sacrifice where no one will remember his good deed.

South Korea's The Handmaiden (2016) is the same way, the director doesn't even want people to watch the DC, it was just a marketing ploy by the studio to do another round of sales but they moved scenes around and kinda ruined the reveals/twists.

Someone needs to fan edit it. There are deleted scenes that NEED to be in the film. That's all the original cut needed. Those 3 or 4 scenes that were cut for time to be reinserted. The actual directors cut sucks. The music changes, the new effects. It's all wonky.

donnie darko is the best movie of all time. a genius masterpiece and cool to boot.
