I'm 50, I thought Last Crusade was mediocre in 1989 and subsequent viewings have only further exposed its weaknesses

The weak macguffin, excessively maudlin sentimentality, a lame villain, the fact that it's so derivative of the first movie, and that stupid fucking train sequence are all major strikes against the movie. A disappointing sequel in an otherwise fantastic year

All things considered equal it might be Always. It's often shockingly atrocious. Something about the genre of "low fantasy" produces the absolute worst films. Basically the action flying scenes are cool but everything else is just wretched.

it's a kino reference to Norman Rockwell and the Saturday Morning Post, it's shot too beautifully to get a Fair rating, and the action scenes are superbly constructed. It's not National Treasure tier.

I always forget that this is supposed to be an American character, not just naturalised? We never see a telephone or letter carrier in this apartment, do we? It seems like an expat would have a greater interest in these things, maybe even international newspapers.

>In the third revision of Jeffrey Boam's original script, Donovan was named Walter Chandler with a company of his own named the Chandler Foundation instead. While Chandler was one of the main villains, he was not intended to be the primary antagonist with the character falling to his death with the tank in Hatay (a fate which would later go to Vogel). Tom Stoppard changed the character's surname to Donovan in his revisions as well as the manner of his demise.
so he stayed to drink from one of the chalices but it's like a scene from one of Shakespeare's comedies rendered in a gothic fantasy style. A bit like where the prospective brides have to choose between three different types of metal boxes or something.

how? Arizona is apparently the most alcoholic state and Spielberg was going to make a true to life biopic in the Seventies
>In the late 1970s, Zemeckis and his writing partner Bob Gale were approached by Steven Spielberg to write a small, low-budget film about Spielberg's own childhood in Arizona that he could quickly make before shooting on 1941. Growing Up, alternately titled Clearwater and After School, was described as a "foul-mouthed, R-rated comedy about 12-year-olds". The film was set to shoot in May 1978, but Spielberg backed out.

>Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull above Last Crusade
Correct. I remember enjoying Crystal Skull as a kid, learned every Indy fan freaked out about it so I went back and watched the original trilogy. The fans just wanted a remake of Raiders but won't admit it because that's the only way anyone should think Crusade is better than Doom and Skull.

As much as I like Crusade, I still admit it's essentially the Rise of Skywalker of the Indy saga. It's a response to how mixed the reception was to the previous entry and played it extremely safe with a samey plot and familiar faces.

Brother the entire thing absolutely drips with Spielberg from start to finish. There's signature shot after signature shot, he didn't even try to hide it.

I'm guessing he wasn't alllowed to be credited for it due to some union thing, but there was no way he was going to let someone else direct his script so he did it on the sly. 100% Spielberg directed it, no question.
