Just an all around good cast and crew with no drama is my guess. Anderson did a good job of walking the fine line between catering to a general audience and the MK fans, giving a secret character his own full fight scene is just too awesome. Robin Shou helped the director on how to film kung fu scenes because Anderson never filmed those before. Lambert was also a complete bro during production. He offered to fly himself to the film locations on his own dime because he didn't want to be green screened, and he also paid for catering. You just get the feeling that everyone was frens and a fun time making this movie.

The problem with every movie past MK 1995 movie is that none of them try to be a serious story, every one seem like a parody
And ironically the tone of that movie was the best despite being first, its a fight to the death for the world with actual heroes, its funny when it needs to be, but its mostly an action movie

What I liked about the 1995 film was it actually took place in the actual fucking Mortal Kombat tournament. Also the fights were kino as shit even without the blood (Which they tried to include with Sub/Shang getting impaled and Scorp's getting his skull sliced off by Kung Laos Cameo Hat.) Also helped most of the actors were actual marital artist so they know how to fight and even get broken ribs like Kang did during the Reptile fight.
