It's not exactly aliens but it's basically aliens. The basis of the story is the Templars have been trying to track down and use super-advanced ancient tech to control the world for centuries, and the Assassins have been trying to stop them by hiding it. The genetic memory thing was built by the Templars so they could search the memories of descendants of olde timey Assassins for clues to the whereabouts of the not-alien tech.
