I like Dredd a lot but the Stallone one was closer to the source material, the problem is that americans can't do justice to a fucking 2000AD comic, they don't understand how something can be serious AND funny/over the top at the same time. Actually, he's a pretty good fit. The Judge Dredd comics are a British satire on American culture. They are more campy and comedic than dark and serious. Both the 2012 and Stallone films misunderstood them in different ways. The 2012 one took itself way too seriously and the Stallone one treated the satire as sincere and unironic.

Dredd makes more sense for Waititi than any of those franchises as Dredd can be very silly and Campy, see stories that deal with Simps and the Fatties as an example of that.
However, Dredd can be very serious, and he shit at having his film have any sense of depth or pathos to it.
So I expect this film to be at best mediocre if it ever gets released.
