The cycle is: Hunter's PR firm puts these out, and allies repeat it on twitter. Low hanging websites want clicks, so they post it. Then allies share it on twitter thus confirming it. It becomes a "story". No one cared, and Nitnendo didn't pay attention or even think about this tall man.
This causes people to trust "the media" less and less, so they turn to social media sites (seemingly unaware they're run by mega-corp tech firms).
To survive, sites need to appeal more and more to news stories that trend on reddit, twitter, etc, so see step 1.
It's an endless cycle and basically can't be fixed. We just sorta decided that twitter/reddit/facebook/insta shoudl run our societies.
