Literally just 'dress for the job you want'. Washington never said he would lead the military but he made it clear he was going to be by arriving in his uniform while waiting for the Continental Congress to select him.

He was a natural leader who was always the biggest man in the room. And until he was elected president he wasn't much of a politician and known mostly for his role in the french and indan war.
He was a smart shrewd guy, but he also intentionally established precedent for checks on the power of the executive office.

In some ways yes but in a lot of respects he still viewed himself as just a humble country gentleman. It's a good thing he admired Cincinnatus, and also that he was sterile. He may have ended up an entirely different man had he been able to sire offspring of his own.

It was very common back in those days for soldiers and veterans to wear their uniforms everywhere. Often they were the best clothes they owned, especially for the poorer ones.

Augustus had no natural born sons but he still ensured that his dynasty would inherit. If Washington had wanted to become a king and form a dynasty he could have, whether or not he was sterile didn't matter in the end.

Because none of the other pussies would.

George Washington was BASED af, and arguably THE greatest American of all time. Nobody risked his ass the way he did, and very few men would give up the opportunity to become king.

It wasn't an old uniform. By the time of the second continental congress he had designed that uniform himself. He chose the colors, blue and buff, to align the American cause with the Whigs in England who were liberal reformers.

Washington was a very industrious and creative man. He designed uniforms for the continental congress to consider for the soliders. It makes sense he would wear his uniform from the French and Indian war. Soliders and officers wear their resume on their chest.

Yeah Washington made a lot of enemies along the way (Charles Lee, Benedict Arnold, Thomas Paine) all of whom made the same points about his autocratic leadership style. He was an ambitious and cunning leader who liked to portray himself as a humble, disinterested idealist but was much more cutthroat than many were willing to publicly acknowledge at the time - Paine specifically warned that 'the world will be puzzled to decide whether you are an apostate or an impostor; whether you have abandoned good principles or whether you ever had any'. That doesn't mean he's a bad leader, but it does call into question whether he was sincerely a believer in the policies he espoused as Commander in Chief and President.

>people acting like it was a question of immodesty or ambition
Washington showed up in his uniform to send a message -- he wanted to resist the British by force and he wanted Virginia to stand with Massachusetts. He wanted to fight. It was a political message, a professing of intentions.

I think the presidency changed him. He didn't like it so he tried to let other people do as much as possible which led him to take a lot of bad advice from Alexander Hamilton and effectively make him the most powerful politician in the country.

Hamilton was better than Jefferson who was a massive liberal faggot who supported the French Revolution. When Washington refused to support it because he had loyalty to King Louis for helping US in the Revolution, Jefferson would talk shit about Washington to the press under a fake name. Washington knew but Jefferson denied it. Eventually Washington found out Jefferson was talking shit about him to a French ambassador, demanded his resignation and never spoke to him again. After he died, Jefferson went to Martha asking her for her support for President and she basically told him to go fuck himself

Hamilton might've been a better human being than Jefferson on a personal level (which is also questionable, he engaged in the same kind of double-dealing and manipulating public opinion under aliases) but his politics were terrible. John Adams had it right. We did need a decently strong central authority but we did not need Hamilton's political gamesmanship and economic fuckery.

Washington very easily could have set himself up as king if he desired. When asked what title the President should be refereed as suggestions such as your honor or your excellency were put forward but Washington felt such titles stunk of monarchy and instead asked to be refereed to as Mr. President a custom we still follow. During the Whiskey Rebellion Washington delayed sending in troops up to the point that the rebels started seizing courthouses and kidnapping officials because he didn't want to be seen as ruling by force. After his second term he voluntarily stepped down setting the custom of two terms for Presidents when he easily could have been President for life if he wanted.

Washington is autocratic only relative to anti federalist idealists like Jefferson who ultimately found themselves forced to embrace more government authority than they wanted simply out of necessity. Compared to the rampant bloated and ever present government we now suffer under Washington's administration is borderline anarchic.

That comes through pretty clear in that series. All of the stuff with his family, him fucking over his son in law, his son Charles, every time he gets into an argument his family just calls him a narcissist that only cares about his reputation and his stature, public perception, etc. They did a pretty good job of showcasing how his ego develops.

He is humble in the first couple of episodes but he still loves attention, makes his reputation in a show trial after all. But in the beginning, he's just trying to get noticed, to make more money for his family. After the Congresses, he feels he has to be the equal of all of these esteemed, well-landed gentlemen and so his ego starts to get the better of him.
And of course, the indignity of his Vice President tenure made him really bitter.
