Box office is important but it doesn't determine cultural legacy. The highest grossing RoboCop film is RoboCop 2014, even adjusted for inflation. But all three original RoboCop films left a much stronger impression. In the modern era it's quite easy for a competent but broadly forgettable movie to make hundreds of millions of dollars.

RoboCop 2014 is really not a bad movie. It has interesting ideas. It has some good scenes. But it feels a bit soulless. Even RoboCop 3 is so much more memorable.

This is like the only movie ever that kept the reveal hidden so long and continues to do so. But it doing so was just at a huge detriment to this film itself by everyone pre-judging it

OG film also had VHS, DVD sales + TV broadcast to build up an audience. In the current era the advertising spend can outpace the production cost. So boxoffice is relevant in the overspending by studios eventually force them to restructure or dilute their slate even more.

Robocop 2014 was unironically good. The problem is they attached it to an IP that carries a completely different set of expectations, and the fans of the original will no doubt hate it.

The RoboCop game is fairly overtly an R3 prequel, and its entire uphold the law vs serve the public trust dynamic is rooted in that film's themes.

It's a shame that we never got a director's cut. Len Wiseman somehow managed to convince Sony to let him release a director's cut of Total Recall 2012, and that's quite a bit better than theatrical. I'm sure RoboCop 2014 has an improved director's cut with a bit more political teeth.

Look, OP. The Robocop reboot pales before the originale Verhoeven Robocop. But you are a dogass RETARD if you think think Robocop 3 is better than it. And I mean Robocop 3. 1 & 2 are great, but not 3

They didn't really have international box office back then or they didn't keep track of it anyway. Domestic box office of the 1987 movie was much better. Plus the 1987 movie made a ton of money on the back end with VHS then DVD then eventually Blu Ray sales.

Since we're doing this, I got a specific complaint about Robocop 2014
Kinoman was too normal
If you saw it, you know what I mean. The visually interesting brain in a jar scene doesn't count. The "adjust his neurotransmitters" scene doesn't count. The whole movie, mentally, he was a regular ass dude. There really isn't anything preventing him from going back to being a husband and father as the world's least disabled quadruple amputee, he is in every way the same person he was before he got butchered

Peter Weller Robocop is mentally FUCKED. He barely remembers, he barely feels. The central definition of his character is that they tried to make him a machine and the bastards very nearly succeeded, he is hanging onto an absolute fraying thread of human consciousness. He is much more so an entirely new person that was made from a few random pieces of Alex Murphy, like how Frankenstein's monster can hardly be called the same person that Igor dug up

If nothing else, Murphy's line to the OCP corpo at the end
>My friends call me Murphy. You call me...ROBOCOP.
is a fantastic way to wrap the series up.

The ninja was just such a godamn lame final boss compared to ED209 or Cain

I do love that every Robocop movie has final boss logic
You know what? The grin is stupid. I get that it's just supposed to show that his jawbone is so fucked his face is stuck that way, but it's still a makeup design choice. I think he might have looked better if he were just as mangled but kept the same Neutral Pissed Off expression he had for the rest of the movie.

Also I recall there being lame Power Rangers type choreography. They really needed to take more of a page from Terminator 2, just the physics of how a smaller, faster, more advanced robot would fuck up a slow moving older one.

They fucked up making the suit so generic. Other than that it was a very competent movie. Not as iconic as the original, but it was a cheat code to make something iconic by then by making it a LE SATIRE. This one tried to play it straight and did a very good job with it.

It's a generational thing. There must be at least two generations by now for whom Michael Bay's Transformers are the Transformers.

Why did they keep a severed hand again? Yeah, if I recall, this was how he was still able to twirl his gun around. In the original it was one of Murphy's mannerisms he still retained imitating TJ Lazer for his son. His right hand in the remake is suppose to be a reference to his left arm in the original being fine, but was tossed and replaced for a robotic one. They could had made it not goofy and had kept his whole right arm with at least most of his upper half of his torso.
