Chung is right
Lore Dumps and World Building is a waste of time for the audience
They belong in RPGs not movies

>place these desires at odds

so, the characters and the viewer are oppositional? what's good for the viewer is bad for the characters? what's good for the characters is bad for the viewer?

flimsy take.

>lore and backstory are a waste of time
What does he base this on? A quick look at the most popular genre fiction movies shows they're all lore heavy with tons of backstory, furthermore lore and backstory is your marketing tool and gets you merchandising options.

Lore is just the movie version of "Remember when", the lowest form of conversation.

Conan is a good example, there's tons of lore behind the character but the film ignores it and that makes it better. What are we told of Thulsa Doom, beyond "he came from some other place and now he founded a cult"? Nothing, and that's perfect. There are no maps shown, no useless expisition.

This is true but in most instances itโ€™s important for the character to understand the world/lore but itโ€™s not necessary for the audience

This is more of an issue with โ€œpremiumโ€ streaming series that need to stretch out a single storyline for a season (if not longer) so they can waste time with garbage audiences donโ€™t need to know about

>Tonight's episode of Surf Dracula: The Lycan Coven elects a new Witch Queen to lead their rites, and their battle against the Vampires of New Transylvania Cove. Including a 10 minute furry lesbian sex scene. Meanwhile, Dracula learns the true meaning of surfing in a continuation of a monologue by a strong woman of color.

What Chung is saying is worldbuilding and lore dump should never be at the expense of the characters. Game of Thrones TV did a great job of giving us world building plus a rich lore without sacrificing the characters. For example if Game of Thrones was remade on Netflix we would get 7 episodes on the history of Westeros and Dragon rearing followed by 1 episode featuring Jon Snow and Daenerys. The at odds part should be an audience member loving Westerosi lore and cool dragons, but the character's human interest story is what has me glued to the seat. Chung is right.

>Fictional events do not affect the viewer
He immediately fails.
The conceit of movies, tv shows, novels, games and any kind of fiction is inherently to make these imaginary concepts emotionally affect the viewer.
If they didn't affect the viewer, nobody would be made happy or excited or sad when watching a movie. They would feel nothing and thus never watch them again and then people would stop making movies because if they don't affect people there's no purpose for them.

>Fictional events do not affect the viewer
He is right in the context of characters. His entire piece is about characters being sacrificed over world building and lore dumps.
>They would feel nothing and thus never watch them again
This explains the diminishing returns of the new Godzilla movies. Then came Minus One. Minus One the characters came first and foremost.

He is not right in the context of characters, he is wrong.
If fictional events and worldbuilding warp around a fictional character to suit them, it makes the character seem unreal, it makes the character seem like the story doesn't affect them, it makes it seem like there are no stakes for the character.
Viewers don't care about characters like these. They call them 'Mary Sues' etc and they're derided.

There's no small part that he's right about, he doesn't "have a point" He's just wrong.
