I can't picture the scene with a more "grounded" "gritty" "realistic" joker having the same impact. In the interrogation scene, Joker's makeup getting scuffed parallels Batman losing his own grasp, it's not needed, but it's a nice touch. In fact, the opening scene, when Joker takes off his mask to reveal just another hidden identity, wouldn't be as memorable if he takes his mask off and reveals just some fucked up ugly freak.
I don't believe we missed an opportunity, I think the director made the right call
