Sam Hyde is part of a particular kind of early internet creator subculture so he actually did think he'd be able to make a fully independent studio or even scene around the right group.

Ironically MDE did probably best of anyone at actually achieving this, but this really cost them in terms of letting them on the regular career ladder. They'd need to become part of a celebrity 'ecosystem' to have reliable and lasting success, and these days the process flings creatives right into the meatgrinder, a group like MDE would definitely be split up to see if any of the components could produce anything useful.

All the MDE guys seem like they'd be fine with saying 'fuck off' to any kind of deal where they don't have creative control (for different reasons), and at least Sam and Nick are already set for life financially (assuming no secret fuckups along the way).

People don't seem to realize that Harland is more of a standup than an actor. You're all judging him based on his IMDB page rather than the fact that hes been a touring stand up for 30+ years. He was the headliner at the first stand up show I ever saw actually. It was at the Irvine Improv back when I was in college. I remember being amazed at the difference in his skill vs the people he had open for him. He got absolutely trashed drunk and just killed. He was really nice too. After the show I said, I'm sure you get this all the time but I really loved Half Baked. He was totally sincere and said I always love to hear it, thank you, and took a picture with me.

The guy has probably seen a hundred edgelord aspiring standups while touring which is why he was able to handle Sam's shtick so well. Dealing with a guy who tries endlessly to shock you instead of coming up with a good joke probably gets old real fast.
