You know this was an odd scene if you think about it. Like the equivalent of the director just walking into the shot and winking at the audience.

i think thats the symptom number 1 of bad writing in modern movies - so often when the characters are talking they are literally explaining the scene (not the plot, the scene) to the audience.

what does it matter that it's salt anyway? i don't get it.
i know that being salty is slang for being upset, but first of all putting modern slang in your star wars movie can't be something that anyone thinks is a good idea and second of all, if it was meant to mock "salty" fans, this must have been recorded months in advance, meaning they must have already known people would hate the movie and if you know that, why not change the movie?
so again I genuinely ask. what was that scene supposed to mean? was it established that salt corrodes walker joints or was it really just a preemptive attack against the people who don't like the movie

It's literally just a thing where he shows a "snow planet" like Hoth, but then goes "hah no its actually not snow, its salt". Its just a pointless subversion/surprise/gotcha.

but that's so lame. it's still preemptive mockery of obvious criticism. if you know people will think it's lazy and lame, why use a white planet? just make it a desert planet or steppe planet if you want a sparse landacape

It’s just a way to clarify the terrain for the audience, and to produce the sympathetic taste of salt in their mouths as they watch a character taste something that turns out to be salt.
I’m serious. Do people think he’s calling the audience salty? I didn’t get that vibe

It’s a new type of terrain for Star Wars, a salt flat, which can be mistaken for a desert, so they made sure to clarify it’s a salt flat.

No, it’s clarifying a new type of planet for the series. It already seemed like salt but they clarified it because they felt it necessary. They are not accusing you of wrongly assuming what the planet is, they just wanted to spend a second of screen time actually including the fact (and taste) of the planet being salty

Because they decided to make soft reboots of the original trilogy. First is tatooine/death star, second is hoth/space chase/fancy planet, third would have been jungle but they rushed to change it by how much of a disaster it became. Rian mixed up the order and made the "Hoth" part at the end to subvert you. It's all garbage nonsense not worth thinking about.

It’s rearranged but I dont think he’s making by a mockery of anyone’s expectations, he just did the alt Star Wars movie so he does things alternatively in it

In terms of the salt planet and putting an AT-AT fight at the end, I mean. Other parts of the movie do definitely attempt to betray the audience as a lesson

Earlier today I was considering making a thread generally saying that movies have gotten so much worse since trope terms like "Meet Cute" and others are now directly acknowledged within media itself
Particular because everyone still engages in all the same cliches they "critique"

it's a bit of a "damned if you, damned if you don't" situation.
they could acknowledge "this is like a scene in a movie!" or they could just do it. the latter is better, obviously, but i completely understand that itch.

there's probably already a wookiepedia entry about Johobi "Planet Licker" Mushmoth, explaining his tragic backstory that led him to lick every planet he lands on and warn others of its composition.

Maybe if there was like a sub-plot where these two or three minor characters on the rebel spaceship could spend the film complaining
>there's just no friggin' salt on this ship!
>none in the whole rebellion, we're low on salt
>anyway back to the space engine

Then after we see them go back on forth on this in maybe a half dozen little scene fragments, we get the big pay-off.

You literally don't need any scene at all. It only exists because Rian wrote a sequence that was intentionally similar to Hoth then got worried people might say it was similar.
