honestly i think the west during the mid 1800s wasn't a place where stuff like that really mattered. probably the east coast, definitely the south, but not the frontier.

One Drop Rule wasn't enforced much until after the territories became states, if it was at all given how southern centric those laws were. In the frontier era it was more 'do your job and shoot wild Indians'. Cowboying was one of the few jobs freedmen got good paying work in, race mattered a little less in remote areas where you needed all hands on deck (unless you were an Indian).
