In my country this movie is a classic.

I very much like this movie.

Thr sequel has plenty of soul, the plot is just kinda retarded, it was obviously a cashgrab but Balabaov clearly was trying nonetheless.

Russian-American here. I liked it, and I can see why it became iconic given that it came out in the chaotic 90s, but I got kind of bored of it towards the end. Decent movie, but I don't really understand all the hype about it. Maybe I'm just too far removed from the Russian 90s experience to get it.

I'm a big fan of Ilf/Petrov's Twelve Chairs, and when I watched Mel Brooks' version I expected it to be nothing like the source material. I was surprised at how serious and respectful it was, although it changed a lot of the source material and turned Ostap Bender from a sociopathic con-man into someone with a conscience.

Same reason as why those Union guys who didn't actually care about slavery still were butthurt that the South seceded from the Union in 1861. The butthurt just derives from looking at a map and seeing that a part of the territory that you emotionally identify with has split away and is no longer under your control.

because of the holodomor which was to artificially infect a bunch of russians into ukraine, then they gained independence in 1991 and they just couldnt accept that because freedom and democracy is very scary to oligarchical gangster states like russia

Of all the soviet republics that had significant, active and armed anti-soviet resistance, Ukraine was the most culturally close to Russia. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia had them too, but they were distinctly different and seen that way, unlike Ukraine. Active and persistent rejection stings harder when it comes from someone you thought to be close to you.

What I always find funny about this movie is the amount of background people just blatantly looking and noticing the camera in the on-location shots. Can’t call them extras because they’re obviously not, but it somehow adds to the movie’s overall MO
