>tfw Krustyโ€™s father disowning him for being an entertainer is a reference to the film The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson
>tfw the modern crop of Simpsons writers would never be cerebral or culturally knowledgeable enough to add in a reference like this and probably donโ€™t even know who Al Jolson is

This is not even close to the deepest classic film reference in the early Simpsons. Although I canโ€™t name any on the fly.

/co/posting, entire thread is greentext, knowing some movie trivia is being "culturally knowledgeable". So very gay.

It came out in 1927. They reference older films?

Do you think the modern crop of Simpsons writers are cerebral or culturally knowledgeable enough to make a similar reference?

>>212880126
He said DEEPEST, not OLDEST. Logically this means most obscure reference, not most aged. You know, like the term 'deep cut?'

The Rashomon joke from the Japan episode. Yes the only reason I know that is because I read it on either wikipedia or tvtropes.

My theory is that on top of just a new crop of young people, culture just "died". The Simpsons and Star Wars go on, but no one has any understanding what they're inspired by. For Star Wars, none of the new people have seen a Kurosawa or John Ford film for instance. Everyone is clued into social media, and "influencers" doing what amounts to reality tv, or recycling pop culture, but nothing is created. Big New IPs technically exist, but most films are dead or dying. Nothing new is created.

No connection to the past. Film as an art form is dying and soon to be niche. To "get" The Simpsons you need to start watching a lot of media from the 40s to 60s.

That episode was so weird as a kid. Back then I didn't even know what a Jew was and 2/3 of the episode didn't make sense. I couldn't understand why Krusty's father would get so mad. Just because he wanted to be a clown? When the father said he never wanted to see Krusty again, did that mean that he threw out his 10-year old child to fend on his own?

>The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson

Have any of you ever seen that? I caught part of it on TCM one night and its bizarre. Like you expect Jolson to be singing with a fake black accent; but his voice is very clearly jewish. And yet at the same time he's painted up in hardcore blackface.

>>212880697

Its super weird, like you watch it and you wonder how could anyone have possibly enjoyed this.

i always find it funny that Warner wanted their first sound film to be special so in The Jazz Singer the very first synchronised line of dialogue is for some Jewish ceremony and its a special and momentous moment in cinema when in actuality it was A Plantation Act that beat it out by a month with some minstrel shukin' and jivin about being a good ol nigga. They cant even say Don Juan was first because it used sound effects not dialogue. Thank you Al Jonson for being the buried first film that no one wants to talk about

George Jessel turned down the part, he would've been more off the wall than Jolson. Zoidberg's voice from Futurama is based on Jessel.
