Romance in movies that aren't specifically in the "Romantic Movie" subgenre tends to distract from and bog-down the plot, detracting from what people ACTUALLY want to see.
"Put a romantic sub-plot in it to get the audience invested!" is peak Corpo-Brainlet stupidity. Had 2001: A Space Odyssey been adapted today they would have demanded a romantic sub-plot be shoe-horned in to "keep the audience invested".
