Sure, they are technically proficient works of cinema. But have you ever noticed how cold and hollow they feel? Like his movies have no humanity, no love? This is no accident. It is intrinsic to Kubrick's intellectual narcissism and tyrannical directorial style. Kubrick couldn't work synergistically with actors. They were just chess pieces to him, to be moved around around a board and sacrificed if necessary. Robert Duvall knew about his too. But people are reluctant to admit they dislike Kubrick films because liking Kubrick is the most common way ordinary people try to signal they have sophisticated taste in cinema.

Who cares? They're still good movies and impressive on multiple levels. The fact that he made movies that were completely different genres and tones, and have them all be really good, is a testament to how good Kubrick really was.

It isn't about the thematic content of the films but the working relationship between director and actor. The tyrannical narcissism of Kubrick is what makes his films so clinical. There is no organic collaboration between actor and director that adds genuine human warmth to the films. When people are cocreating art there is love. All Kurbrick's films radiate is emptiness.
