>the most popular tv shows of all time
The X-Files was never that popular tho. It certainly had a cult following, but it never achieved the same status among normies as something like GoT. It was more like Star Trek — a niche show among geeks.

Gillian Anderson is hot
They hit the late 80s early 90s vibe really well
Fun monster of the week formula, but also hints of a greater overarching plot
Reminds us of a time before technology and social media drove everyone insane

It's Sunday night, I am curled up in my room
The TV light fills my heart like a balloon
I hold it in as best I can
I know I'm just another fan
But I can't help feeling I could love this secret agent man
And I can't...

Wait any more for him to discover me
I got it bad for David Duchovny
David Duchovny, why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me?

My friends all tell me,
"Girl, you know it's just a show,"
But deep within his eyes
I see me wrapped up like a bow
Watching the sky for a sign
The FBI is on my mind
I'm waiting for the day
When my lucky stars align
In the form of...

David Duchovny floating above me
In the alien light of the spaceship of love, I need
David Duchovny hovering above me
American Heathcliff, brooding and comely
David Duchovny, why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me?

So smooth and so smart
He's abducted my heart
And I'm falling apart
From the looks I recieve
From those eyes I can't leave
Well you can say I'm naive
But he told me to believe...

Ooooooooo...

My bags are packed, I am ready for my flight
Want to put an end to my daydream days and sleepless nights
Sitting like a mindless clone
Wishing he would tap my phone
Just to hear the breath of the man, the myth, the monotone
And I would say...

David Duchovny, why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me? Why won't you love me?
David Duchovny, why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me? Why won't you love me?
David Duchovny I want you to love me
To kiss and to hug me, debrief and debug me
David Duchovny I know you could love me
I'm sweet and I'm cuddly - I'm gonna kill Scully!
David Duchovny, why won't you love me?
Why won't you love me? Why won't you love me?

Yeah...

I'll be waiting...
In Nevada...

It was much more popular than Trek. It was a big pop culture hit but more of a "cool" show than hugely popular. It THEN became hugely popular. But that coincided with it becoming sub-standard. Unlike Trek it's later seasons had HUGE numbers (not even GoT had numbers that large) and tons of emmys and golden globes (obviously something Trek never had).

lmao it put Fox Network on the map and proved it could be more than just The Simpsons channel. All the newstands were full of magazines with either Duchovny or Gillian or both's faces on it. The first movie made 190 millions at the box office in 1998, which was something unheard of for basically just a two hour long episode of a show that was still airing on tv.

To be fair, Scully really doesn't see anything supernatural herself until the later seasons.
Early seasons always shows us and Mulder, but not Scully if you pay attention to it. She's always somewhere else or just a few seconds late to actually SEE it.
Even the alien embryo at the end of season 1 might as well just be a deformed human fetus.

There's some supernatural stuff se encounters first hand in the first season. On the epsiode her father dies, she sees a manifestation of him and then the serial killer who is claming to be a conduit for the dead ends up telling stuff to her that comes true.

But, of course, she can explain them all by her own trauma and by the fact that the killer was a manipulative mastermind, who could have found out stuff and even planned them himself.

Especially on the earlier seasons she is always given a good enough of a reason to remain a sceptic, either by not seeing things herself or by some other more reasonable explanation.

Nielson ratings were solid back then, especially considering it was on Fox which was considered a 2nd tier network not part of the top 3 (ABC, CBS, NBC). By season 5 it was regularly over 20. It was huge in the coveted 18-49 demographic and on the cheaper Fox which made it a godsend for advertisers.

Seinfeld

my trifecta of comfy 90s kinos that I re-watch almost yearly

I don't usually make it past season 6 of the x-files though, it really starts to become a chore after season 7 especially and 8-9 just aren't really worth watching even if they're not that bad. The reboot seasons are trash and can be ignored completely outside of 1 or 2 episodes.

I honestly don't know, stopped watching Supernatural like 4 or 5 seasons in for the same reason, instead of hunting ghosts and mythical creatures across the US every episode turned in to fighting a demon (human with different color eyes).

I was a Junior in high school when X-Files first started, and at my school it caught on like wildfire. About halfway through the season we had a group of 8 friends that were now regularly going over to the rich friend's house every Friday night to watch X-Files at 9pm because he had a 32" TV which at that time was massive to all of us. We would then head out to Denny's afterwards to grab food. Even for reruns we would watch still looking for stuff we missed during the original broadcast. I remember us being pissed because when they were showing the 2nd part of season 1 they didn't show new episodes for 3 weeks because 1 fell on Christmas Eve, and another on New Year's day. They always did this though, even season 2 because it was "around Christmas/New years" they took a break from new episodes. Execs didn't like showing new episodes around any Holidays. Fucking Bullshit. I think also one fell on Thanksgiving too that year so no new episode. We were up to 10 friends my Senior year, and season 2 was even more Kino than season 1. It was just as popular through college as well, though by the time I graduated it had the movie and then Season 6 and the tonal change of moving to Vancouver. I still think up through 6 is fully watchable, 7 is only really where it began to drastically fall off.

Zoomers can't even understand something like this I think, the experience of watching shows like this with your close friends and talking about it and the excitement of waiting for the next episode. Some times it was a stinker, but even then it was always fun. Comfy as fuck.

The mytharc episodes are a huge part of why the show was as good as if was for the first several seasons. Even later seasons have occasional mytharc winners.

It kind of straddles between the 2. It's a mix. Sometimes it ends up being clearly the latter, but often it implies that the "plausible explanation" is bullshit, or Mulder is the only person that sees the Supernatural parts.

I liked the Syndicate, CSM, Deep Throat, secret labs and stern-looking hitmen, but the story was often convoluted and didn't really lead anywhere.
For instance I kind of like the Nisei/731 two-parter (especially the fake NSA agent) but the story doesn't make much sense.

The secret to not getting walled as woman is being an absolute cockslut.

See, if you stop getting fucked regularly your body says "oh, I guess we're out of the game, time to shut it down" and then your vag dries up and your hormone levels drop off and you shrivel up like a prune because there's no point in keeping that whole system up and running if you're not going to actually use it. But if you're getting dicked down daily the juices keep flowing, so to speak.

It's the other way around. In tv executives' eyes Friday is the graveyard slot where shows were sent to die. X-Files was put there since the beginning and yet managed to do so well, keep increasing viewership, getting great critics reviews and word of mouth that they graduated it to Sunday, which was the most coveted slot since it benefitted from "the watercooler effect" (people talking about the previous episode with their coworkers and spreading more word of mouth).
All things lost nowadays with streaming and binge watching.

the mythology arc was tolerable at first because it actually felt like it was leading somewhere
but once you notice they keep piling on questions without ever answering anything you can't un-notice it and the storyline becomes total trash by the end of the first run (season 5 which was supposed to be the final season which lead into the movie)

It was Duchovny's fault. He wanted to be in Hollywood now that he was hot shit and getting more offers, and also he supposedly hated living in rainy Vancouver. Carter and the writers knew the show was getting stale and even tried to pull a coup on Fox and end the story arc in season 7, but the network wouldn't let it go.
