you can (poorly) explain it by saying that Gondor is in massive decline by this time and it's sparsely populated, but every single settlement has to have SOME arable land close by

It was a farmland in the books
Also the lowest wall was supposed to be blackened due to all the dirt building up, a sort of reminder that Gondorโ€™s best days were behind it and the decay and division had set in after the civil war.

Yes? Hes telling pippin who it mentally a child and has never been outside of his hometown he kinda needs constant guidance. Heck I imagine if faramir was there instead he would have had to say it still and he actually lives there.

Yeah it was also retarded that hackson depicted Osgiliath as being basically a single charge away from Minas Tirith, when in the books it's actually like ten miles away. You have to accept the LOTR movies as being a scaled down depiction of the much more realistic-scaled war from the books. It's like how Skyrim is meant to be the size of a country but the actual game map is more like a large farm, how places like Whiterun are meant to be vast cities but actually end up as small villages.

That's how it was depicted in the movie for dramatic purposes. Faramir's forces are retreating from Osgiliath back to the gate of Minas Tirith which is multiple days worth of travel. In the condensed movie logic it's fine but if you stop and think about it it's hilarious.

Ok not a single charge, but it was depicted as being not far away at all. The difference between an hour's ride at most compared to most of a day's ride.

Pippin had never been there before, the Hobbits are often both in the books and the movies, used as a "fish out of water" to explain the larger world. None of the Hobbits have been out of the fucking Shire, why wouldn't Gandalf explain where they were going?

Middle Earth is supposed to be enormous. Like they're traveling for many months. At some point it's silly to not think some day along the way they'd have said "oh, we're going to Minas Tirith, capital of Gondor. It's this big white city with a pointed rock sticking out the front." It instead makes the whole area seem tiny like it just takes a few hours to get there and they never got around to discussing it since there wasn't much time and they were in a rush.

The capital of Gondor, to a Hobbit, would be like seeing the eighth wonder of the world, why is it so weird to you that Gandalf would take a second to tell Pippin about it when it's in view? Why do you have this sort of autism?

This really seems like poor design. Surely giant rocks and avalanches periodically roll down that massive convenient ramp and slam right into the citadel at the top.

What I had completely forgotten about the books is that even powerful and studied characters had a murky knowledge of the world.
For instance the only person in Gondor who even knew where Rivendell is was Denethor.
Elrond had somewhat forgotten about Bombadil and had not travelled the parts around Old Forest and the Barrows in ages.
The Galadhrim who find the fellowship have only heard rumours about the Havens and didn't even know their approximate location.
They were also very estranged even from the mirkwood elves despite not being terribly far from Thranduil's kingdom.
Both Rohan and Gondor people didn't even know exactly what Lorien was or whether it'd prove an ally against Sauron.
Even Celeborn (accounted wisest of the Elven Lords in ME) wasn't terribly sure about Fangorn forest.
Radagast had no idea where the Shire was until he was ordered by Saruman to find Gandalf.
The lands west of Isengard (Duneland?) were all deserted and doubtful even to Aragorn iirc.

It's wild to think about such a different past age. No GPS or google maps and certainly no highways. Going out to those places was a long, arduous expedition. And it seems like stepping foot outside any of the peaceful places was met immediately with dangerous creatures. So I can see why everyone just stays in one spot for decades. Gandalf was the weird one always wandering from place to place.
