Was Travis supposed to be autistic? I have the tism myself and he has ALL the signs, the scene where heโ€™s talking to the secret service agent makes it especially obvious.

Autism wasn't really a huge cultural phenomenon when Taxi Driver was made. He was just supposed to be a socially awkward loner. You could make a case that most "loner" themed cinema is autism coded, but I don't think it was intentional.

Trying to make conversations with random people like the SS agent and the theater cashier isnโ€™t something loners are prone to doing.

I would say most likely some PTSD from the Marines and a touch of schizophrenia. The "You talking to me scene" and the mohawk at the end shows signs of mental illness.
I liked the character. He seemed very right wing and wanted to clean the streets of the criminals and freaks. But he also had his own demons to deal with.

You wind up meeting a lot of Travis' in the real world if you head out enough and most are just genuinely hopeless rather than autistic. No doubt being retarded helps still
