The last act was always going to be a tough one. In the book and Richard Cobern's illustrated novel, Topika is supposed to be virtually identical to the pre-war 60s American suburb you'd expect but with every ounce of life and freedom taken out of it. I commend L.Q Jones for taking another direction and making Topika downright bizarre and almost inexplicable instead. Still a weird tonal shift but it manages.
