You're a multi cell organism. Multi cell organisms emerged billions of years ago according to scionce because how how more efficient they were on passing on generic material. At some point it became better to have the proto-brain be able to solve problems and retain memory, then intelligence and so on.

Consciousness doesn't really have a purpose in evolution, it's just something that is there, a side effect and we're stuck with it.

If you weren't conscious you would still want to pass on your genes like the most basic life forms but due to our brains we have completely separated from nature and the animal kingdom just to basically do nothing.

Life is still about passing on genes and making sure your children pass on their genes.

We could have done the same thing as proto-humans except without all the psychological burden, only animalistic pain.
