The movie was targeted to kids. So why are the first scenes space politics?
Anakin should have been the main character. The bits before Anakin should have been brief or implied. It should have been showcasing a father-son relationship between Anakin and ObiWan, which mirrored the relationship between ObiWan and QuiGon. Have more scenes where ObiWan is protecting/instructing Anakin.
You can have some space politics to buffer the scenes and keep the adult audiences in their seats. But if you're gonna do a kid's movie, then the kid should be the protag at the very least.

What we got instead, was Anakin being introduced halfway in. So to keep kids entertained they introduced the obnoxious CGI pratfaller JarJar Binks, which cursed the movie.

Oh I just thought of this, you could also set up a dynamic between Darth Maul/Darth Sideous to mirror the father/son dynamic in a clever way. Darth Maul should have at least 1 characterization scene rather than a random swordfight on Tatooine
