All good choices, and yet much of his filmography is still in obscurity. I would recommend Il Professore as an introduction to his Italian language films.
For instance, many people feign ignorance that our hero Benedetto was once a PHAROAH? Surprising, yes, but true..

It’s my favorite. Ironically he complained to Cassavettes that he didn’t understand what the film was about or what he wanted him to do. For me, it’s a love letter to Ben. Cosmo is complex: always funny at the wrong time, and serious when no one is looking. A very funny and beautiful film. I always feel emotional at the end, during his pep talk to the girls.

There was a JC retrospective for free, I kept missing the relationship dramas and finally got time for this. Had no idea it was jazz improv influenced, it went on and on and broke my brain. Bad Lt. may have tried vainly to do sth similar. It's like his All That Jazz, cos Falk/JC's chemistry just overshadowed everyone.

I think Husbands is a better introduction to the style. Cassavettes had a sense of humor ahead of his time and the awkward situational comedy is very in your face in Husbands. Dark movie but also full of love.
Chinese Bookie is all those things, but then there is a more of a plot on top of it. A plot that is hard to follow because the protagonist is oblivious, like Inherent Vice.
They’re both great, and peppered with lots of strange performances from non-professionals.

Husbands. There's still a missing hour of footage that will never be found that he's in. Things seemed pretty optimistic until even Criterion couldn't find it.

I like his look in Chinese Bookie, especially the leather jacket.

A couple clips of the footage are in the documentary “making husbands” on youtube. By all accounts the missing hour (I think closer to 50 minutes) is more light hearted antics like the basketball scene and the gambling. When John was pressured to cut it down from 3 hours he opted always to leave in the most intense and serious pieces over anything he thought was too sentimental or cute. Even at the expense of confusing the continuity in a couple places, ha.
There is a novelization that Cassavettes drafted up with his script girl. It still exists and its held by some college. Never been published. I think it’d be great to get out there. Like how they published the shooting script of Greed. We just need to email Ray Carney about it I guess.

Oh yeah, I've seen it. It sucks that the only really clean scene we got from that was the guys dancing with the girls, which is a really beautiful scene too. The one piece that interests me for sure is Gazzarra and a whole crowd rushing to the trains, it looked really surreal (could be just the fact that it's behind the scenes and we see everything).
There's also this picture.
>There is a novelization that Cassavettes drafted up with his script girl.
Thank you for being the only other person on earth I've seen mention this. I'm aware it's mentioned in one of his long ass biographies, didn't know it was done with help. It's like the Holy Grail to me. I really like Husbands, and it seems to be John's most sentimental work, it seems to be the one he had the most control over as he even went to the cutting room himself with it. I'm very curious what's in the novel, seeing as the movie is already incredibly improvised and breaks a lot of rules.

I am almost totally positive there was a university website that had the manuscript in their archive and had some sort of program where they would print you a copy for some large sum like $200. I came across this in maybe 2017 while doing a lot of research on John’s films and I was broke so I didn’t get it obviously. Now I can’t find it. Again, someone just needs to email Ray Carney and get the real info. If there’s anything to know about John’s work he knows it. To say nothing of the multiple unfilmed screenplays and the three stageplays still out there somewhere.
I heard some film festival finally screened the first cut of Shadows. After Gena and Al Rubin spent 20 years blocking it from release. You can’t make this shit up!

Seconding this. Always surprised when I see people recommend holding off on it until being familiar with Cassavetes' style
