Real medieval battle lines are at most 6 to 12 men deep. Any more and the guys in the back are not only useless, but would actually more prone to flee.
Real medieval battles are thin lines that stretch for kilometers and not a square of thousands of dudes.
As a ruler you want thin, looooong lines to encircle your enemy, not a thick blob where 80% of the men do nothing besides watch themselves get surrounded and flee.
The back lines would be swarming with messengers going back and forth with orders and reports.
Of course that would be annoyong to film.
Pic rel is considered a skirmish or small battle.
