Where does Ginny being some weird ghost-in-the-wall and Tom acting like a retard in general waiting for Pottah to figure out the plot over the course of something like six months come in? The timeline and events just felt like a mystery box with no overarching purpose. Nothing else even happens in the movie. Nobody has any character development, we were already properly introduced to Hogwarts in the first film, and Voldemort/Tom Riddle will promptly be forgotten and then be reintroduced like three more times before becoming a proper threat. Chamber of Secrets just feels like filler, and really bad filler at that.
Why the fuck didn't Lucius just give the diary to Draco, Snape, or better yet just do it himself?

Ginny was using it as her own diary. Pouring her heart and soul into it each time she wrote in it, sharing her deepest secrets and thoughts. This gave the soul fragment power over her and let it control her in her sleep and then as it progressed it gained more and more power from her. Sort of like how Voldemort returned by having a ritual and the rat guy sacrificing his hand to give the soul fragment a power boost, except instead the diary fragment was using Ginny as the sacrifice and slowly leeching her life force away.

Lucius had no idea what the diary was because Voldemort would never have told one of his followers about his horcruxes. He just knew it was a powerful dangerous artefact entrusted to him by Voldemort for safekeeping and thought it could be used to hurt or kill Harry without it ever being traced back to him, and so he slipped it in Harry's cauldron when he had the chance. Then Ginny got it because Harry gave all his Lockheart books to her and the diary was slipped in with them.

I'm not sure it could really count as a retcon. I think the diary was the moment she started thinking about horcruxes and how it was a way to explain why Voldemort survived. It's way too specifically "soul trapped in an object" to not have been the starting point for her horcrux ideas. She of course didn't plan on having seven of them and all the setup, she probably thought the diary would be enough to explain why Voldy didn't die, until she realised she wanted a scavenger hunt before Harry could finish him off and had to invent a whole load of them in later books.

The first one is pretty decent. The second one is a confusing mess that dumps the fantastic beasts part to instead be about espionage shit and the third one goes full retard even by Harry Potter standards. It's simply amazing how bad it is. The final showdown between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, the big finale for the trilogy and a fight that's been hyped up since the HP book days, takes place in a white void to save on CGI costs and they just do the shitty "beams interlock and then they push back and forth" thing again instead of something like the Dumbledore/Voldemort ministry duel like everyone was waiting for.
